April 2009 - All- In- One Redundant Power

Whether they die with a bang or with a fizzle, the result is the same, the power fails and the system shuts down. Not acceptable? Well PULS, the world's most innovative DIN Rail Power Supply Manufacturer agrees, and this is why they have a range of redundant power supplies with the required diodes and signals built in.

Why choose redundancy? Simple use it to prevent the problems caused by unscheduled power failures. This could be as simple as missing a dead line for production or as catastrophic as an explosion. Assuming that in most applications it would merely be a missed dead line caused by power failure, this can still be extremely costly. For example, the cost of people unable to work, sales and preceding payment delays and subsequent jobs having delayed starting schedules to name just three.

The PULS SLR range is one of the best all inclusive redundant power supplies out on the market at the moment. There are three units available, the SLR2.100, SLR5.100 and SLR10.100 with a 24Vdc output at 2 Amps, 5 Amps and 10 Amps respectively with built in redundancy diodes and relay signalling. They are designed to work as a pair to ensure that the system they are powering will not have a single point of failure from the power supply system.

The Internal Diodes are included to prevent possible feedback from the failed power supply. This could happen if the power supply has an output circuit failure it could simulate a short circuit causing any other power supply in the system to fail. Without diodes it negates the bonus of using two separate power supplies to give a back up as there is a likelihood of the failed unit bringing down the second unit. This could cause the system to fail regardless.

Output relay and LED signalling is also an essential part of completing a redundant system, as if a unit fails it is identified and can be replaced quickly. If this goes unnoticed or unmonitored and the second unit fails then this could lead to total system failure and problems could occur.

Passive current sharing is standard on all the PULS SLR power supply units and will allow them to operate together without the need for any complicated load sharing system. Simply put, together they regulate their current output so at full load capability one unit will run at about 60% capacity and the other at 40% capacity. This not only gives a greater life time of both units but also prevents any switch on failures that can lie unnoticed until the power supply has a load connected on the output.

Harry Moore, Managing Director of PULS UK comments, 'When cost of ownership is becoming more of an issue the SLR units are a perfect solution to ensure system stability and keep our customers ahead of the game!'
